Last year 200 Senior/Healthcare industry professionals from all over California joined us and Senator Tony Mendoza for a special Town Hall to discuss SB 648, his bill to establish oversight for referral agencies that refer clients to Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly and also to provide protections for the seniors who use them.
On Friday, August 5th Senator Mendoza will discuss updates on SB 648. We’re meeting at Norwalk Council Chambers on 12700 Norwalk Blvd. in Norwalk, 90650 from 10:00 – 12:00.
Topics that will be discussed include how the idea of this bill was formed, who the stakeholders are that have been involved in the negotiation process, and what the next steps will be moving forward. Additionally, it would be beneficial to hear from the audience on ways to improve this bill, since many participants will be experts in this field and also to hear stories and incidents that demonstrate the necessity of SB 648.
Some of the key points in the bill is:
- Enacts provisions to guard the privacy of seniors, requires the referral agency to maintain liability insurance.
- Requires referral agencies to be licensed under the Department of Social Services (DSS).
- Requires placement referral agencies to disclose their most recent visit to any facility to which a client is being referred, and provide the client with information of the Department of Social Services’ most recent evaluation of the facility; as well as a notice advising clients where complaints can be directed.
Come and share your ideas on how to improve this bill. As this bill will affect not only Senior Referral Agencies but Assisted Living Communities, Home Care Agencies, and many other businesses that work within the Senior Industry you’re encouraged to hear the Senator and to have your voice heard regarding this important Senior Industry legislation.
